Food products containing GMOs found on the shelves of Almaty
Пищевые продукты с содержанием ГМО обнаружены на прилавках города Алматы 22.09.2020

Specialists of the National Center of Expertise of the Committee for Quality Control and Safety of Goods and Services of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty, during a study in 3 samples of instant noodles “Gin Ramen” from South Korea and in one sample of Turkish cookies “Butter Cookies Danish Pride” found an excess GMO content.

The Department of Quality Control and Safety of Goods and Services of Almaty, KKKBTU MH RK, purchased 89 samples of food products as part of product safety monitoring. All purchased samples for examination were delivered to the Almaty laboratory of the National Center of Expertise.

Laboratory tests have shown that the content of genetically modified soybeans in noodles exceeds 1.4% to 10.25%, and in cookies 47.75%. At the same time, manufacturers’ labels do not contain information about the content of genetically modified ingredients in these products. It should be noted that the permissible norm for the content of GMOs in food products is no more than 0.9% according to the technical regulations of the Customs Union “On the safety of food products” (TR CU 021/2011).

The products were purchased by distributors at the Barys-4 and Akbulak wholesale markets without documents confirming their safety. Based on these facts, the Department of Quality Control and Safety of Goods and Services is taking measures to identify non-conforming products in the retail chain and remove them from sale.

As is known, GMOs increase the risk of malignant neoplasms, growth retardation in children and adolescents, as well as the occurrence of allergic diseases, and so on.

We also inform you that if substandard products are identified, Kazakhstanis can contact the territorial departments for quality control and safety of goods and services of the KKBTU Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
